Austin Community College (ACC) proudly celebrates First Gen Day during the week of November 3, 2025, recognizing students, staff, and faculty who are the first in their families to attend college. These Riverbats exemplify courage, perseverance, and the power of education to transform lives, not just their own, but for generations to come.

Student Spotlight: Vianca Pinto de la Paz

“Being a first-generation student to me means breaking barriers I never thought I would. It means having the courage to want a better future for myself and my family. I am the first one in my family to learn how to navigate college — from figuring out financial aid and choosing courses to learning how to manage my time.
At the beginning of my journey at ACC, I felt afraid and overwhelmed, but over time, I learned that asking questions and seeking help helped me overcome that intimidation. It connected me with supportive people and organizations like Ascender, who have been the backbone of my journey.
Being first-generation is empowering because I know I am setting a positive example for my daughter — showing her that with determination, hard work, and support, anything is possible.”
Staff Spotlight: Timothy Garcia, TRiO Talent Search Advisor

“An education journey is about overcoming adversity — and at the end, enjoying a banana milkshake knowing you overcame it.
My educational journey has been filled with both ups and downs, with challenges. I’ve faced personal hardships, from navigating a parent’s health issues to experiencing unemployment, but each obstacle has taught me valuable lessons. Through it all, I’ve discovered a deep passion for supporting the next generation of first-generation college students. From what I have, my experiences allow me to uplift others, helping them prepare for the unpredictable twists and turns life may bring. There’s nothing more fulfilling than empowering others to succeed and showing them that resilience can lead to remarkable growth.”
Timothy graduated from ACC in 2020 and Texas State University in 2023, continuing to inspire students through TRiO’s mission of academic support and empowerment.
Faculty Spotlight: Ray P. Sandoval, Department Chair and Professor, Student Development and General Studies

“Being the first of anything can always seem a bit overwhelming! When I was a kid, I wanted to be an actor, an FBI agent, and the first Hispanic President of the United States!
Now, as a first-generation high school graduate, college graduate, veteran, and professor, I don’t feel overwhelmed — I feel connected. When I teach students who are also striving to be the first in their families to attend college or graduate, I feel a deep sense of pride and belonging.
It’s important for our students, their families, and our communities to understand the significance of being the first to accomplish academic, professional, or personal goals — and even more vital to ensure they won’t be the last.”
