The votes are in! ACC’s 13th annual Earth Week Eco Bag Contest winner is Nicolas S., a Computer Science student whose bold and creative design captured the spirit of this year’s theme: “Our Power, Our Planet.”
About 1,025 Riverbats across the district voted, selecting Nicolas’ design from among 30 student submissions. ACC faculty, staff, and students can purchase the 2025 Eco Bag featuring his artwork.

“I wouldn’t have entered an art contest for just any reason, but sustainability is a cause I genuinely support. Our lives depend on the Earth’s resources—some renewable, some not—and our future hinges on how wisely we use what the planet gives us. Sustainability really is about the long term, and it’s essential for keeping our world going,” says Nicolas. “As a computer science major and lifelong gamer, I’ve always felt connected to technology and pixel art. I wanted to draw from that and create something that reflects how Earth is like a complex system, full of energy and potential. If we tap into that system thoughtfully, we can help both ourselves and the planet thrive.”
The bag will be available for purchase throughout the year. You’ll also see the design showcased online and at all campuses in ACC’s sustainability display boxes.

Carly T., a biology student, earned second place with her design.
“Although I’m a biology major, I decided to enter because I’ve always enjoyed drawing. I’ve never submitted my artwork to anything serious before, so I was honestly shocked to learn I placed. I just really wanted to draw a cute bat,” says Carly. “I believe we all have a role to play in reducing our impact on the planet. I try to shop second-hand as much as possible, and even small actions—like recycling a single can—make a difference.”
The contest is sponsored by ACC’s Office of Energy & Sustainability. For more information about the office and ACC’s environmental efforts, visit austincc.edu/sustainability.
