The fall 2024 general election is an important one, and Austin Community College District (ACC) encourages all Riverbats to make their voice heard. There are many important national, state, and local items on the November ballot—including several ACC items.

On Tuesday, November 5, polling locations will be on two ACC campuses: Cypress Creek and Hays. Remember, ACC employees are granted two hours of administrative leave to cast their ballots once their supervisor has cleared them.

ACC on the Ballot

Lockhart Independent School District (ISD) voters will find ACC on their ballot as part of a special annexation election. If Lockhart-area voters approve the measure, the Lockhart ISD territory will join the ACC district, granting residents access to all in-district benefits.

For voters currently residing in the ACC district, there are three trustee seats on the ballot. Voters will decide on Places 7, 8, and 9. Board members serve six-year terms and are chosen at large.

Place 7:  Board Chair Dr. Barbara Mink (Place 7) is retiring from the board. Voters will decide between Cole Wilson and Sherri Taylor.
Place 8: Incumbent Stephanie Ann Gharakhanian is running unopposed.
Place 9: Incumbent Julie Ann Nitsch is running against Joseph Sefton.

Election results will be posted to the College’s election web page.

Early Voting Efforts Through ACC Votes

ACC was selected out of 150 colleges nationwide to host a free concert for its exceptional efforts to engage students in the voting process as part of the Community College Concert Competition. The nonpartisan competition was created by Levi’s® and SHOWTIME/MTV Entertainment Studios (MTV) in partnership with the Students Learn Students Vote (SLSV) Coalition, the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN), and Good Trouble Collaborative.

Hundreds of students, employees, and their guests filed into ACL Live at the Moody Theater on October 24 to hear rising artist Jessie Murph.

Additionally, as part of the Community College Coalition, Levi Strauss & Co. funded a massive mural on the ACC Rio Grande Campus parking garage. It’s located along W 12th Street. The local artist developed a custom design to encourage the community to vote.

ACC hosted Parades to the Polls from October 21 to November 1 at five campuses—Highland, Riverside, Rio Grande, Cypress Creek, and Eastview. The events featured a spirited marching band, students, staff, and community members walking together to a nearby polling location. Participants enjoyed free food, drinks, and music before the parade.

If you couldn’t join ACC at one of its Parades to the Polls and still need to vote, you have until Friday, November 1, to vote early. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5.
