Proposed tax rate would remain among the lowest of community colleges statewide & includes exemptions

The Austin Community College District (ACC) Board of Trustees has proposed the tax rate for the college for 2023-24.

The tax rate of $0.0986 (9.86 cents) per $100 valuation consists of $0.0854 for Maintenance and Operation and $0.0132 for Debt Service.

If the proposed rate is approved, the annual amount of taxes imposed on an average home within the ACC district valued at approximately $504,461 would be $497 for the year.

A public hearing on the proposed tax rate will be held during the board’s September 18 meeting.

ACC provides the following property tax exemptions for homeowners:

  • Homestead exemption: ACC provides a $5,000 homestead exemption to all residential taxpayers (or 1% of property value, whichever is greater).
  • Exemption for seniors (65+) and homeowners with disabilities: The college also provides an additional $75,000 exemption for seniors and homeowners with disabilities, for a total homestead exemption of $80,000.00.
  • Tax freeze for seniors (65+) and homeowners with disabilities: In 2021, the ACC Board of Trustees enacted a tax ceiling/freeze for seniors and homeowners with disabilities. The ceiling freezes ACC taxes at the amount paid in the year that you qualify for the exemption. The college taxes on a home may go below the ceiling, but not above.

Contact your county’s taxing district for information on how to apply for the exemption or to verify that the exemption is being applied.

Annual Budget

About 68 percent of ACC’s annual budget comes from its property tax revenue. Other funding is through student tuition and fees and state funding.

In July, the ACC Board of Trustees approved a $491 million budget for fiscal year 2023-24. The budget includes funds for the operation of new facilities and raises for all employees.

Tuition and fees continue to remain unchanged for the tenth straight year and remain at just $67 per credit hour for in-district students.
