Parenting students are balancing a lot: coursework, jobs, and raising kids — but ACC faculty and staff can help support their persistence in meaningful ways. Here are six ways you can support them.

Tip 1: Share Resources in Your Syllabus and Announcements

Students are more likely to utilize campus-based resources when faculty and staff mention them, add them in an announcement, or include them in the syllabus. Even a monthly reminder about the CARE Network’s free resources can make an impact.

Tip 2: Know ACC’s CARE Network Resources

Pointing students in the right direction starts with knowing what resources are available under the CARE Network: the childcare scholarship, the student emergency fund, Riverbat Bites food pantry (free at every campus, including diapers, wipes, and period products), mental health counseling (including 24/7 virtual support through TimelyCare), and connection to public benefits like SNAP and WIC.

Tip 3: Check In and Refer Students to the CARE Network

If a student shares they are struggling, ask them if they’d like to be connected with a CARE coordinator. You can then submit a CARE referral, and someone will reach out to get them connected to the resources they need.

Tip 4: Understand Title IX Protections

Pregnant and parenting students are protected under Title IX and may be entitled to accommodations. If a student discloses a pregnancy or related need, connect them with ACC’s Title IX Coordinator so they get the right support.

Tip 5: Point Them to Their Advisor

A student’s advisor can assist with getting parenting students access to priority registration for first pick of classes, flexible class formats, and building a manageable course load. Encouraging that connection early sets parenting students up for success.
