Fifteen years ago, a purple bat took flight, giving Austin Community College District (ACC) a new spirit. In 2010, the Riverbat brand was born. It was encapsulated in our beloved mascot, R.B. Bbhoggawact. The Riverbat is a symbol of connection, creativity, and community — representing the spirit that unites ACC students, alumni, faculty, and staff across Central Texas.

More than a mascot, R.B. represents what it means to be part of ACC — a community where everyone belongs. From campus events to community parades, R.B. brings people together, spreading joy, pride, and school spirit wherever he goes. Serving as the person behind the mask has also helped launch careers, including one former mascot who went on to become a starring cast member at the Disney parks.

“R.B. is more than a mascot; he’s a bridge,” says Brette Lea, ACC vice chancellor of College Relations and Marketing. “From the very beginning, launching the Riverbat took collaboration across departments and with our students. Bringing him to life today continues that teamwork and sparks connection, pride, and joy. We are proud that it gives students a chance to grow, lead, and feel part of something bigger than themselves.”

Behind R.B.’s high-fives, dance moves, and ever-present smile is someone who knows him better than anyone else: Dahlia Anzaldua-Torres — or as she likes to say, “R.B.’s mama.”

From Day One, Dahlia has helped bring R.B. to life, guiding him through hundreds of campus celebrations, graduations, and special events. Wherever R.B. goes, Dahlia is close behind, ensuring the Riverbat’s wings continue to spread joy and ACC pride.

As ACC marks R.B.’s 15th birthday this November, the celebration goes beyond the mascot itself — it’s about the people, passion, and pride that have made the Riverbat an enduring part of ACC’s story.

Hear What ACC Employees Have to Say

“Having managed a mascot team before, I know just how difficult it is, and Dahlia makes it look effortless! In Student Life and in Sports, we are grateful every time R.B. appears. It shows us that we are supported, and adds an element of school pride and excitement that can’t be measured,” said Troy Jefferson, Student Life director. “Having R.B. at the games really gets the crowd going, and enhances the brand beyond ACC, as the other team and their fans are just as excited to see him! Thanks for everything, Dahlia!”

“There’s something powerful about the way R.B. makes everyone feel seen and included, like they truly belong at ACC. R.B. reminds us that college isn’t just about classes and credentials, it’s about community. I’ve had the privilege of working with Dahlia for over 20 years, and she has always and continues to embody the value of yes, yes to collaboration and yes to making moments that matter. Her heart and hard work behind the scenes bring that spirit of belonging to life wherever R.B. goes,” said Mison Yun, College and High School Relations associate vice chancellor.

“When I think of what ACC represents, Dahlia is the first person who comes to mind. She is ACC — always out front, always the smiling face that welcomes everyone: students, staff, and community. She’s the most dedicated person I’ve met, tireless in her efforts to show ACC in the very best light,” said Trish Welch, Career Services director. “And as for R.B.? I’m a superfan. I never miss a chance to dance with them! We talk about Joy and Belonging as core values at ACC, and Dahlia and R.B. are the embodiment of that spirit. Together, they bring energy, connection, and pride everywhere they go.”

“I had the privilege of hiring Dahlia when she first started working at ACC, and I’ve seen her grow in spirit and enthusiasm with every position she has served in, promoting ACC,” said Loretta Edelen, Community Engagement director. “Dahlia’s dedication, leadership, and spirit give life and energy to the mascot and the R.B. team. They do such a wonderful job in promoting the College to all age groups and providing positive energy behind the pursuit of higher education at ACC!”

“Dahlia truly bleeds purple. She embodies the spirit of ACC and deeply believes in the vision and values that make this College such a special place,” said Alejandra Polcik, Student Support Systems manager. “Thank you, Dahlia, for pouring your heart and soul into the ACC brand — and for being the most caring and dedicated ‘mom’ R.B. could ever have!”

“Dahlia is one of the most dedicated ACC members I know. She bleeds purple and is an outstanding leader for R.B.,” said Zannie Garvin, Rio Grande Campus campus coordinator.

You can join in the celebration the week of November 17, when R.B. will visit ACC campuses to mark his birthday in true purple pride fashion.
