Austin Community College District (ACC) celebrates the Lunar New Year with workshops centered around Chinese traditions. Hosted by the ACC Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Cultural Center, the events are free and open to the ACC community.
Chinese Calligraphy Workshop
Chinese calligraphy, the art of writing beautiful Chinese characters, is one of the oldest and most revered art forms in the world, and it remains a significant part of Chinese culture. This hands-on experience will allow you to connect with a traditional form of artistic expression while learning about its cultural significance and practicing mindfulness.

Mahjong Workshop
Mahjong is a classic tile-based game that originated in China during the Qing Dynasty. The game’s distinct tiles and intricate rules reflect centuries of Chinese culture, incorporating elements of strategy, skill, and luck. In this fun and interactive workshop, you will learn this classic Chinese game’s traditional rules and strategies. All skill levels are welcome.

About Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year is celebrated by more than 1 billion people around the world, including in China, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, and many more. The dates of Lunar New Year celebrations are determined by the phases of the moon. The holiday begins during the second new moon after the winter solstice, around late January to mid-February, and celebrations usually last for 15 days. This Lunar New Year, which starts on January 29, is the year of the snake.
