Lockhart ISD (LISD) residents are now getting all the benefits of being in-district at Austin Community College District (ACC) after area voters approved an annexation item on the November ballot. The College is already moving forward with an opportunity to establish a physical presence in Lockhart.
College and Lockhart leaders met on Wednesday, December 11, to get to know each other and discuss next steps.
Effective immediately, all LISD residents have access to ACC’s in-district benefits, including no out-of-district fees for LISD high school seniors who are taking advantage of the College’s Free Tuition pilot program.
The first phase of the process moved quickly. The Lockhart community and the College partnered to identify programs and services in the area, as well as spaces on school grounds to house such programs.
As part of the second phase, the College is expected to close this month on the historic Ford Building near the square to serve as a College center dedicated to bringing high-demand programs and services to the community. The ACC Board of Trustees previously approved administration to begin contract negotiations for the Lockhart property.
Opportunities will likely include courses that support general education and transfer as well as skilled trades such as HVAC, welding, and automotive technology. Stakeholders will continue to explore opportunities to bring additional workforce training and dual credit offerings to the community. More details are forthcoming.
Lockhart ISD is the College’s first annexation in 14 years. For more information on ACC’s service plan in Lockhart, visit austincc.edu/lockhart.
