The average property tax bill will not increase under the proposed new rate from the Austin Community College District (ACC) Board of Trustees during the regular meeting on Monday, August 5.
The board is considering a no-new-revenue tax rate of $0.1013 (10.13 cents) per $100 valuation, consisting of $0.0881 for Maintenance and Operations and $0.0132 for Debt Service. The proposed rate would mean the average property tax bill would not increase. The college’s tax rate remains among the lowest of community colleges statewide
A formal vote will be held at the September meeting. The proposed rate is needed to support the adopted fiscal year 2025 budget.
All ACC taxpayers remain eligible for the college’s various 2024-25 tax exemptions, which include:
- Homestead exemption: ACC provides a $5,000 homestead exemption to all residential taxpayers (or 1% of property value, whichever is greater).
- Exemption for seniors (65+) and homeowners with disabilities: The College also provides a $180,000 exemption for senior taxpayers and homeowners with disabilities, for a total exemption of $185,000 for those taxpayers. This is an increase of $16,000 over last year’s exemption to offset the impact of increased property appraisals and is the most generous exemption policy in the region. Contact your county’s taxing district for information on how to apply for the exemption or to verify that the exemption is being applied.
- Commercial property owners: Commercial properties are taxed at the same rate as residential property; however, per Texas Property Tax Code, commercial properties are taxed on both real property and personal property, while residential properties are only taxed on real property.
Annual Budget
In July, the ACC Board of Trustees adopted a $534 million budget. About 67 percent of ACC’s annual budget comes from its property tax revenue. Other funding is through student tuition and fees and state funding.
The board voted to maintain in-district tuition rates for the eleventh consecutive year in April.
The new budget cycle begins September 1.
