Are you searching for an effective way to enhance student success in your courses? Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a FREE academic support program that allows students who have excelled in a particular course to support future iterations of the same class.
These standout students, known as SI Leaders (SIL), attend lectures, take notes, act as peer model students, and facilitate collaborative study sessions to help students grasp challenging course material and increase content retention. It is a paid, part-time position that provides students with an opportunity to develop leadership skills.
Research shows that students who regularly participate in SI sessions typically achieve, on average, a full letter grade higher than their peers who do not engage with the program. SI has also been shown to reduce course withdrawal rates, especially in courses deemed high-risk.
Incorporating SI into your teaching approach not only enhances student success but also contributes to a supportive learning environment with no extra work on your part. This spring, SI supported 17 departments at ACC, with 84 dedicated SI Leaders guiding 1,395 students through sessions.
If you know a student who would excel as an SI Leader, nominate them today! Nominations will be accepted until 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2024.
