In recognition of the Month of the Military Child this April, the Austin Community College District (ACC) Military Families Center prepared and distributed 1,000 care packages to military-connected students.
“The children in military families often experience unique transitions, including frequent relocations and parental deployments,” said Vanessa Errico, ACC’s Military Families Center Manager. “We honor those children every April with this special event. Our initiative reflects ACC’s ongoing commitment to supporting military communities both inside and outside the classroom.”

Through direct outreach to Camp Mabry and Fort Hood military installations, ACC celebrated these children while highlighting the resources and opportunities available to their families and encouraging early conversations about future educational pathways.
Each care package included a children’s book donated by Book Spring and other fun items from community partners such as Austin PBS, United Through Reading, and The Comfort Crew. It also included a specially curated ACC kit designed to introduce students to higher education in an engaging and age-appropriate way.
Approximately 700 care packages were distributed to kindergarten to 5th-grade students and their families at Oveta Culp Hobby Elementary on Fort Hood. Another 300 care packages were distributed to the Texas Military Department State Family Program and the Texas Army National Guard Child and Youth Program at Camp Mabry.
Throughout the year, the College’s Military Families Center offers unique workshops and training programs that can provide critical career and life skills and help military spouses and their children adjust to life in Central Texas and connect with other military families.
