More than 130 ACC service-learning students participated in the 2023 ACC Service-Learning Student Showcase at the Highland Campus on Thursday, May 4.
The showcase featured 33 projects from classes in Biology, Dental Hygiene, Composition and Literary Studies, Philosophy, Religion and Humanities, Biotechnology, Psychology, Sociology, and International Programs. Students shared their posters and presentations with visitors throughout the day.
During the event, Simone Talma Flowers, executive director of Interfaith Action of Central Texas, discussed the value of the organization’s collaboration with ACC on the Red Bench: Conversations That Matter dialogue event on April 4, 2023.
Additionally, Dr. Linda Cox, ACC Service-Learning Program coordinator, and Dr. LaKisha Barrett, assistant professor of Biology and ACC Service-Learning Research Fellow, spoke to students about the value of their community engagement work.
The event was sponsored by the Teaching and Learning Excellence Division and hosted by the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Center.
About the ACC Service-Learning Program
Service-Learning is a high-impact practice that integrates community engagement into the curricula of academic courses to meet course objectives. ACC’s Service-Learning Program assists faculty in finding community partners, designing engaging projects (including on-campus and remote opportunities), and helping students find a sense of belonging and purpose during their time at ACC. In addition, service-learning experiences readily translate into career skills. More than 600 students and 30 classes participated in the program in spring 2023.
Faculty interested in learning more may participate in an Asynchronous Online Training that offers training in service-learning best practices. The online training offers a stipend, professional development credit, and a supportive community to help faculty implement service-learning into their courses.
