{"id":1930,"date":"2022-07-11T13:28:01","date_gmt":"2022-07-11T19:28:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infohub.austincc.edu\/shared-governance\/?p=1930"},"modified":"2022-08-18T11:37:54","modified_gmt":"2022-08-18T17:37:54","slug":"become-an-ascender-mentor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infohub.austincc.edu\/shared-governance\/blog\/2022\/07\/11\/become-an-ascender-mentor\/","title":{"rendered":"Become an Ascender Mentor!\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Submitted by Student Affairs Communications<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ACC employees looking for opportunities to make a difference in students\u2019 lives are invited to become a mentor for this year\u2019s cohort of Ascender students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/students\/ascender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ascender<\/a><\/strong> is a free student support program open to all first-year ACC students wanting to earn a bachelor\u2019s degree either at ACC or through transfer to a four-year university.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to receiving one-on-one mentoring, students in the program take classes together, attend family-friendly events, form friendships, and celebrate LatinX culture along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mentoring is a crucial component of Ascender. The unique relationship between mentor and mentee helps students begin to form a network of individuals who will support them through their first year of college. Many students in the program are the first in their families to attend college. Mentors serve as a valuable, guiding voice that is often able to motivate students throughout the semester and help them see the bigger picture when they are struggling or need direction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The time commitment required as a mentor is minimal (approximately 6 to 9 hours during the semester), and the impact on students is invaluable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information about the program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/students\/ascender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>visit the Ascender website<\/strong><\/a>.
